Immunizations

"What vaccinations are required before my child starts Kindergarten?"

  • Four doses of Tetanus, Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis (DTaP) *one dose on or after 4th birthday.

  • Four doses of Polio *fourth dose on or after 4th birthday; a fourth dose is not necessary if the third dose was administered at age 4 or older, and at least 6 months after the previous dose

  • Two doses of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)

  • Three doses of Hepatitis B

  • Two doses of Varicella (chickenpox) or evidence of immunity

IMPORTANT: If a child does not have all the doses listed above, needs additional doses, and the next dose is medically appropriate, the child must receive that dose within the first 5 days of school or be at risk of exclusion from school.

"What if my child has a medical or religious exemption for vaccinations?"

PA School Code Subchapter C. Immunization defines a medical or religious exemption.

 § 23.84. Exemption from immunization.

 (a)  Medical exemption. Children need not be immunized if a physician or the physician’s designee provides a written statement that immunization may be detrimental to the health of the child. When the physician determines that immunization is no longer detrimental to the health of the child, the child shall be immunized according to this subchapter.

 (b)  Religious exemption. Children need not be immunized if the parent, guardian or emancipated child objects in writing to the immunization on religious grounds or on the basis of a strong moral or ethical conviction similar to a religious belief.
